Electronic Pre-Press Guidelines - The Inove’' Way

The following information has been compiled to assist you in preparing electronic files for the Inove’ Graphics team. Using these guidelines will enable us to produce your job in the most cost-effective, expeditious way possible.

Fonts
Two of the most common problems with electronic files are missing fonts and stylized fonts. Always provide both screen and printer fonts with your files. What fonts we have at Inove’ Graphics may not be the same version that you used in your files. This can cause reflow of text or at least a delay in the output of your files while we attempt to resolve the issue.

Remember to also include fonts that have been used in placed graphics (i.e. EPS files). If text in placed graphics has been converted to paths (or curves in some programs), we will not require these fonts.

TrueType fonts are more likely to create problems in the production of your work. Therefore, we recommend that you avoid using them. For best results, use Postscript Type 1 fonts from reputable companies (i.e. Adobe fonts). IF you must use different font types (adobe, truetype, etc.), please use separate font suitcases for the each type of font you send.

Avoid stylizing the fonts, use bold or italic versions of your typeface. Creating bold and italic type through use of the style menu or palette can lead to substitution errors and other unpredictable results.

Page Layout
Inove’ Graphics prefers that you furnish your files as single page or as “reader spreads” (facing pages or consecutive pages). Our imposition software handles the page layout to our needed specifications. Don’t create an oversize document with crop marks drawn in. Make the document actual size and use crop marks from Quark or Pagemaker. Use master page items when trying to align objects such as running heads and page numbers.

Try not to use small increment rotations of images in Quark or Pagemaker, but make these in the application in which it was created. Be sure to delete any extra elements in your document such as empty text or graphic windows for example. This will decrease the RIP time of the file.

Graphics
Please include all graphic support files (eps, tiff, etc.) with the document file in which they are used. If you are using other design programs such as (Photoshop, Freehand, llustrator, etc.), please include the original application file. If the software gives you the option, you should always link your graphics to your publication rather than imbed them. Imbedded images cannot be altered. Should there be any problems / trapping issues with your graphics, we will not be able to help you with them.

This can cause added expense and delay to your job. If using TIFF files in Quark, do not use NONE as a fill color. Outlined high res files should be EPS files with the clipping path selected. Do not use TIFFs with a fill of NONE. With a white background some EPS images will appear transparent when placed in Quark, but will print opaque. Always check to be sure these images are sent to the bottom layer, so it doesn’t block out type or other graphics.

All linked graphics should be updated to the latest version shown as “OK” in picture usage dialog box. Try to use smooth curves, with as few points and corners as possible when creating clipping paths. FPO (low res) files cannot be modified, all changes should be made to the high res file.

Size
Generally, you should create your file to include at least 1/8” bleed beyond final trim. You should also watch your panel sizes on folded jobs. A 12 x 9 document that will fold to 4 x 9 will only have TWO panels that will be 4 inches. The first fold in panel will of course need to be undersized by approximately an 1/8” to allow a proper, clean fold. Thus making the actual page size of the document 11 7/8 x 9. You should create your page size in your layout program accordingly.

Colors
Please use CMYK builds for process work rather than RGB, and Pantone colors for spot color jobs. When using spot colors, be consistent on the name of the color between different programs, or you could get more than one type of that spot color. PMS blends in Illustrator should have beginning and end points that are a tint of the PMS color, not a percentage of CMYK. Be sure to include composite lasers with files. A color laser is very helpful if possible.

When you use color, you will need to consider how the job will be trapped. If you are not comfortable doing your own trapping, we will be happy to take care of this for you. Our output system has built-in trapping software. If you decide to apply your own trapping to your project, please make a special note of this on your order form or bring this to the attention of your sales consultant.
